Alpha Lipoic Acid and Migraines in Women

The effect of Alpha Lipoic Acid on women with episodic migraines was recently published in the Nature Research journal Scientific Reports.

In the randomized double-blind trial, women between the ages of 20 and 50 with episodic migraines, which they defined as more than 15 headaches per month, received Alpha Lipoic Acid or a placebo for three months.

Among the women that completed the trial, a significant reduction in headache severity and frequency was reported, along with improvement in indices related to daily performance and well-being.

The Alpha Lipoic Acid group had a 45 percent decrease in headache days per month than the control group.

This is not the first report of a potential benefit of Alpha Lipoic Acid supplementation for migraines. A 2007 study found benefits as well.
